In his autobiography My Life and Times, Jerome wrote: "I did not intend to write a funny book. I did not know I was a humorist. It was to have been The Story of the Thames, its scenery and history... The publisher objected to the title, so I hit upon Three Men in a Boat, because nothing else seemed right." It has not only become one of the most popular books in the English language, but certainly is one of the most loved shows in Brian´s repertoire (definitely with the Stuttgart public).
Their unanimous agreement that they are all overworked and in need of a rest, results in three London chums, George, Harris and J. (to say nothing of the dog, Montmorency), rowing up the Thames one hot summer at the end of the 19th century. It is a voyage of mishaps and hilarious adventures: Harris and party get lost in the Hampton Court Maze, Montmorency has a minor contretemps with a disreputable-looking cat, J. inadvertently takes a dip in the river, George brings along a banjo.
