Talk with Dr. Angela Miller, Washington University, MO.
This lecture will take us through five episodes of the history of American landscape art. First we will look at the compositions and the force driving the nineteenth century nationalist landscape. The aesthetics were used to miniaturize, manage, and contain nature’s disruptive energies and place nature in the realm of the nation’s cultural objectives. 20th century environmental values assist us in reconsidering this tradition, and in redirecting the center of authority from culture to nature.
One of the late 19th century landscape artist mentioned in the lecture will be Martin Johnson Heade, whose images of nature help create a form of proto-environmentalist thinking.
Dr. Angela Miller, a Yale graduate and Professor at Washington University, MO, will conclude with a look at how the land art of the second half of the 20th century both engaged and critically reconstituted the subject of nature within the context of radical shifts in cultural perspectives.
In Kooperation mit dem Kunsthistorischen Institut der Universität Tübingen und der Kulturabteilung der US-Botschaft.
