In her elegantly and poetically written memoir, the author unfolds the entire drama of modern Iran through the tragic story of two sisters: Rachlin was given to her aunt, a widow who had been unable to conceive. The girl was lovingly raised among supportive widows who took refuge in religion from their frustrations as women in an oppressive society. But Rachlin’s father, whom she barely knew, claimed her back. Later in life Rachlin moved to the United States to attend college, ultimately staying here.
