Americans are often viewed as supremely confident about their future, but in fact since the Great War Americans have reacted politically, socially, and economically out of fears about their security in the times to come.

Prof. Norrell, holder of the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in American Studies at the University of Tübingen, will explore how America’s insecurity was dramatized after the beginning of the new millennium by challenges from the Arab world and repeated failures of performance among American businesses, especially in the financial sector.
